The road to Omaha has officially begun with the NCAA Division I baseball tournament getting off to a hot start.
Defending champion LSU trailed Wofford 3-1 heading into the bottom of the eighth Friday, but home runs from Michael Braswell III and Jared Jones evened things up. Then in the bottom of the ninth, Steven Milam hit a walk-off home run -- his second homer of the game -- to catapult the Tigers into the winners bracket of the Chapel Hill Regional. It was Milam's first career multihomer game.
Just hours later on the same field, fourth-seeded North Carolina won on a walk-off grand slam against Long Island. It was the first time since the NCAA tournament went to 16 four-team regionals that there have been two walk-off homers in the same regional on the same day.
Elsewhere, No. 1 overall seed Tennessee cruised to an opening day victory after winning the SEC regular-season title and conference tournament. Mississippi State hit a walk-off home run against St. John's, the third walk-off homer of the day. UC Irvine blew an eight-run lead before a walk-off win in the ninth inning against Nicholls -- one of six walk-off wins on the day. The Greenville Regional was turned upside down when Evansville upset No. 16 East Carolina and VCU upset Wake Forest. The same thing happened in Tucson, where No. 13 Arizona and Dallas Baptist were upended by Grand Canyon and West Virginia, respectively.
Since 1999, 93% of the time, regional winners have won their first game, with just 7% suffering a loss in their opener.
