After a year of vacation and some traveling, I'm buying a one way plane ticket to establish a life in New York City. I've tried conducting a job search from here on the west coast, but the online job boards are really only so useful and most of my contacts and former colleagues are here on the west coast. With budgets tight and relo packages scarce, there's no replacement for actually a living there. Besides, does anyone really get hired on Monster.com?

My most recent role was as an FP&A financial analyst for a large Fortune 500 company managing the budgets and planning for a $200M division. (I can send you more details in a PM.)

I'll likely be leaving in the next two weeks. If you have a friend or relative in NYC that you can put me in touch with, (either in corporate finance or banking) I would be most appreciative. Not expecting help with job prospects, but rather someone to meet for an "informational interview". It would be nice to discuss with someone their thoughts about New York, finance and get a new perspective on the field and perhaps other career paths.

Thanks!

I made it! Arrived three days ago and have been apartment hunting. This place is great... I should have moved here long ago.

On a positive note, the buzz seems to be that corporations are starting to open up the pipelines a bit and hiring again.

The race begins!

It's funny that you're moving to NYC, while I'm trying to move to LA. Moving to NYC, FP&A/Corporate Finance (7) I have a friend who's in Asset Mgmt and maybe able to give you some pointers. PM me and I'll put you in touch with him.

I've been here for 3 weeks now and it has been awesome. Some general thoughts:

The weather (see the news yesterday?) could be considered harsh by some, but it doesn't bother me. I even like it. Overall NYC can be horrendously expensive (food/housing) but there are deals to be had if you look carefully. I just scored a apartment. My share of the rent in Manhattan (I have two roommates) could buy me a 3bd/2ba in middle America. I found a great supermarket right near my apt; prices are not significantly different than San Francisco, or even Sacramento for that matter. That said, 99% of supermarkets in Manhattan are really expensive. Found a bar that does 25-cent chicken wings on Mondays (10x better than Hooters). Falafel guy in Brooklyn a couple of train stops away serves up delicious falafels for $3. On the flipside, if you want to spend big bucks, there are plenty of opportunities to do so; but everyone knows that, it's a world-class city. There are tons of things to do and see and explore. When I lived in SF, I would occasionally hear the comparison "SF is like a small New York". WRONG. Not even close. SF is like a village. I love SF but the scale and sheer enormity of NYC is incredible. If you don't like the urban lifestyle, you'll hate it, if you do, you'll love it. I love it.

There's your wall of text. Moving to NYC, FP&A/Corporate Finance (13)

Feel free to hit me up anytime for info. My knowledge is growing daily.

Awesome, I'll definitely hit you up when questions arise. My girl just came back from living there, and tells me all about it. I'm not moving for quite a while (2011 at the earliest), but I figure I'll start asking questions now rather than reading touristy forums, just in case a career opportunity arises in that area. Let me know how commuting is and how you like it.

Great! Anytime.

I don't have a job yet, so I can't comment on the commute, but I'm in a very central location in Manhattan so it'll likely be less than 20 minutes. Moving to NYC, FP&A/Corporate Finance (16)
